Summer Book Fairs

Bloomsbury Summer Fairs

Bloomsbury Book Fair

The Summer Fair is among the key fairs for book collectors from the UK and beyond as part of International Fairs Week, the Bloomsbury Summer Book Fairs for 2016 have now passed. Dates for 2017 will be posted here as soon as dates are arranged.  The Summer fairs always ‘kick-off’ with the Bloomsbury Book Fair, followed a week later by the Bloomsbury Book, Ephemera & Postcard fair, this fair  has grown considerably over the past two years and now has dealers in books, maps, prints, ephemera, and a large contingent of postcard dealers so the event is well worth a visit.  Both our events are scheduled to form part of the London International Antiquarian Book Fair Week; as usual the focus is on rare, secondhand & antiquarian books and ephemera from all periods, but with specialist dealers from all parts of the UK, Europe, North America and further afield also in attendance providing an even greater selection of books, ephemera, manuscripts, maps, prints and photographs to browse & buy…

Special Events & Fairs

A Fair for all Seasons

Beyond our annual Summer Fairs we also host other special occasions outside the usual calendared Fairs, in particular  themed fairs. For the past two years we have incorporated within our Bloomsbury Book Fair in March and August specialist fairs relating to MILITARY AND NAVAL subjects, which we will be continuing in 2016. We are also pleased to announce that we will be welcoming to the Bloomsbury Book Fair at four separate fairs exhibitors from the Ephemera Society. The first of these fairs takes place on February 14th 2016 followed by 10th April, (all dates are available on our website). Coming up in 2016 are as usual our Christmas Fairs, on December 11th (Bloomsbury Book Fair), December 18th (Bloomsbury Book & Ephemera Fair) and December 10th (Gerrards Cross Book Fair), always designed to bring some seasonal cheer and often a great resource for those looking for something special, unusual or unique as a Christmas present. From Victorian chromolithographed Christmas Cards to modern Private Press publications, signed autobiographies or even classic modern fiction in first edition, you’ll be amazed how inspirational our Christmas Fairs can be!

To check out all of the dates when specialist and themed fairs are taking place within our  Bloomsbury Book Fairs in 2016 visit the Bloomsbury Book Fair website HERE  We are also looking to develop various ideas for more themed fairs dedicated to books, ephemera, postcards, manuscripts, maps etc. relating to various themes/collectors/subjects…more information to follow soon…

Books at Etc Fairs

Books of all ages, shapes and sizes, from Incunabula
and Antiquarian up to Modern First Editions

Books at Etc Fairs
Whether you’ve an incurable interest in incunabula, a fondness for festschrift or uncontrollable ultra-modern urges, there is something for every bibliophile and book collector at the Etc Fairs. All our fairs are attended by a wide range of leading booksellers and specialist dealers from the UK, covering the whole gamut of collectable ‘works on paper’, from early printed antiquarian books right up to modern first editions and the next generation of children’s classics.

History, literature, science, medicine, travel, art, bibliography, sports and pastimes are all catered for the Etc Fairs in Bloomsbury, London & Gerrards Cross, Bucks., with something for all ages; children’s classics of every era, from educational 19th century chapbooks to Harry Potter, as well as the more adult-oriented tastes catered for by some of the most renowned private presses and their often irrepressible illustrators.

Manuscripts at Etc Fairs

Illuminated leaves, old documents, deeds, archives, autograph correspondence, cut signatures and more...

Manuscripts are often a historian’s most essential resource, providing an invaluable window onto times past. From early illuminated leaves, manorial deeds with hand-drawn estate maps, legal deeds and documents with the original wax seals, recipe books, medical receipts and lengthy autograph letters through to more ephemeral pieces such as cut signatures, postcards and signed photographs, all our fairs provide a wide selection of manuscript and autograph material.

Ephemera at Etc Fairs

Ephemera  /əˈfem(ə)rə/
1. Of a transient, brief nature
2. Items of collectable memorabilia, written
or printed, with short-term purpose

Ephemera at Etc Fairs
Ephemera, in all its multifaceted forms, is increasingly popular amongst collectors. The sheer diversity of the subject, period and nature of ephemera makes it impossible to summarise briefly, and there are at least two associations dedicated to the representation of it here and in the US (The Ephemera Society and The Ephemera Society of America).

Our Bloomsbury Ephemera Fair, is particularly representative of this specialist area of collecting, but it always has a strong following at the Bloomsbury Book Fair too, with many of the country’s leading specialist dealers (and collectors) regularly in attendance. From postcards, tickets, and invitations to legal documents of antiquity, privately printed broadsides and unique printed survivors of a bygone era, and with prices ranging from less than a pound to thousands of pounds, there is something for every collector of ephemera at these fairs.

Exhibitors

If you are an ephemera dealer or even if you are just an enthusiastic collector who is looking to become more immersed in the exciting world of ephemeral dealing, contact us now to find out about stand availability and prices.

Maps, Photographs, Prints & Original Art at Etc Fairs

Outside of the books, ephemera and manuscripts there
are a wide range of other items for sale at the Etc Fairs
The three largest areas of other collectables at these Fairs are:

Maps

Antique and old maps have a strong and dedicated following. Cartography excites those with an appreciation of the map as an aesthetic object, with a passion for travel, or an admiration for the process and skill involved in mapping; the Etc Fairs cater for these enthusiasms handsomely, with a selection of maps sometimes ranging from the earliest separately produced examples, perhaps even with contemporary hand-colouring, to modern maps and guides.

Maps at Etc Fairs
Photographs at Etc Fairs

Photographs

Photography has become one of our most popular collecting sectors; since its inception in the mid 19th century it has garnered ever-increasing respect as a medium, and a highly regarded artform in its own right. Cartes-de-visite, scenes from foreign travels, architectural splendour, portraiture, war reportage, eroticism, surreal manipulations of the world around us through to limited edition prints by modern artists that can achieve staggering prices, it really has become one of the markets to be involved with as a collector, or a dealer. The Bloomsbury Fairs in particular often features splendid examples of all the above, alongside photographically illustrated books show-casing some of the great photographers, from Fox Talbot to Angus McBean, Cartier-Bresson and Man Ray, through to the likes of Robert Mapplethorpe and Diane Arbus, and the unique record these artists provide.

Prints and Original Artwork

Engraved, lithographed, aquatint and woodcut topographical views, architectural perspectives, ornamental illustration, portraits, sporting scenes, caricatures and more across a broad spectrum of dates feature large amongst the offerings regularly to be found at the Bloomsbury Fairs, and sometimes our Gerrards Cross Fair, as well as works by a variety of illustrators, including original drawings, paintings and more.

Etc Fairs currently organises and manages regular fairs specialising in rare, secondhand, antiquarian and collectable books, plus manuscripts, ephemera, maps, prints, photographs and more!

The longest-running events under our umbrella are the London Book and Ephemera Fairs, which take place in the Royal National Hotel, Bloomsbury, London, throughout the year. The largest of these, held in the Galleon A, B and C Suites of the Royal National Hotel, is the Bloomsbury Book Fair, which has as its primary focus books, but also features strong contributions from some of the country’s leading specialists in maps, prints, ephemera, manuscripts and photographs.

The London Ephemera Fair, held at the same hotel in the Galleon A Suite, is one of the preeminent Fairs specialising in ephemera, again with strong representation from the other collectable sectors, including books.

The Gerrards Cross Book Fair, which runs on Saturdays approximately six times a year at the Memorial Centre in Gerrards Cross, is apparently the oldest running book fair in the country, and the range of books on offer is diverse, all shapes, sizes and prices, with something for everyone.

Testimonial

“Our favourite fair is the monthly Etc Ephemera Fair, run by Kim & George Jeffery whose light touch in fair administration & helpfulness is an example that a lot of fair organisers should follow! The Etc Fair is somewhat unique in that it is neither a book fair nor an ephemera fair, but transcends all boundaries, covering the whole gamut of works on paper. Nothing else quite like it as the long queue at each monthly event testifies…”

Jackie Adams

The current George Jeffery is the latest in a long line of bookdealers, it therefore seemed a natural progression to start running a fair when the opportunity arose almost 13 years ago with the Ephemera Fair, which saw a mixture of dealers specialising in books, maps, prints and ephemera. With George’s own experience of exhibiting and with the help of his wife Kim, the tentative roots of what is now Etc Fairs has grown and now incorporates the three fairs listed here. With the acquisition of the Bloomsbury Book Fair five years ago Jackie was enlisted to help with the growing amount of admin and organisation needed.
